Sim Smith is delighted to invite you to the unveiling of Kiss the Storm, an exceptional textile installation by Daisy Parris alongside the launch of the artist’s first monograph.
This project is the first time British painter Daisy Parris will work in the medium of textile, an evolution of their large-scale abstract paintings which will see a mammoth 5-meter unique textile installation unveiled over Frieze Week, London 2025.
This event will take place at Censors' Room, Royal College of Physicians, 11 St Andrews Place, Regents Park, London NW1 4LE. Please contact info@sim-smith.com for more details.
The project will coincide with the launch of Parris’ first monograph, a publication spanning four years of paintings with contributing texts by Gina Birch, Skye Sherwin, Sue Tompkins and Dr. Hester Westley. Book signing will be at 2pm each day.
The project will push forward the material elements that exist in Parris’ paintings, interlacing threads of their daily practice of stitching, collage and text application with the woven form. There is an affinity to the ritual of textile in their work and this material masterpiece will take the next step in Parris’ practice, in providing a visual sensation that sets the form apart from painting. Hand-knotted, woven chains of varying thickness are interleaved to compose Parris’ visceral mark making in a textural relief surface. Parris will manipulate the textile, creating a surface that has become synonymous with their practice.
Continuing to investigate narratives of queer identity and psychological highs and lows in their work, the slow process means many of life’s subjects are considered and physically worked through in the making. This piece is also rooted in the rural landscape in which they work, acknowledging the changes of the seasons, of weather and the catharsis of working with one’s hands in such a place.
This is a unique project devised in collaboration with Daisy Parris, Sim Smith, Artwise Curators and marks the launch of TEXTORIAL and the launch of Daisy Parris’ first monograph.
TEXTORIAL is a brand new collaborative initiative established by curators Laura Culpan and Susie Allen from Artwise. TEXTORIAL brings together a team of experts to commission world-renown artists to produce expertly crafted artworks that extends their practice into the medium of Textiles.
The installation will be on view at Censors’ Room in The Royal College of Physicians’ iconic Grade I listed modernist building in Regent’s Park designed by renowned architect Sir Deny’s Lasdun. Visiting will be free.
